History of Bodrum
Bodrum’s long and rich history dates back to the 4th century BCE in the Persian Empire. Mausolus and his wife Artemisia II ruled the city of Halicarnassus throughout their reign. They laid down the city’s pavement and constructed a massive palace near the port.
Mausolus’s sister and widow, Ada, took over as ruler of Halicarnassus after he died. Ada took a bold step to ensure her status as queen until her death by adopting Alexander the Great as her son, ensuring his conquest of the region and her eventual ascension to the throne.
Ada’s death ended the Hekatomnid dynasty, but the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus continued to represent the city for decades afterward. Bodrum castle, located on the southernmost tip of the peninsula, was built by the Knights of Rhodes in the 1300s.
