History of Antalya

The city of Antalya certainly has a long, intriguing story to tell. Its beautiful sights and fascinating history draw people from all over the world. The history of Antalya dates back to the 2nd century when it was used as a seaport by King Attalus II Philadelphus, who named the city “Attalia” which means “home of Attalos”.

This land was later given to the Romans by Attalus III Philometor Euergetes. After the decline of the Pergamum rule in this area, pirates took control over it and it became known as “Pamphylia” meaning “very productive.” During the time of the Crusades, this city was used as an embarkation point for the Palestinian forces and it was also a Byzantine stronghold.

In the 13th century, Turkish-Selaqui ruler Kay-Khusraw captured the city of Attalia and it became an important part of the region. In the 15th century, this city was incorporated into the Ottoman Empire, which was originally captured by Bayezid I in the 14th century.

During World War I, Turkey lost the war and Italy was one of the victorious allies that claimed control over Antalya. The Italian troops were driven out by nationalist forces only three years later. This city’s long and storied history is one of the main reasons why it remains a popular tourist destination for those interested in culture and history.
